Spring Into Action Around Your Home!

We made it! With this past winter’s frigid temperatures and record-shattering snowfall safely behind us, now is the time to see to it that the major systems of your home are in good working order before problems occur.

When thinking about what needs to be done around your house this Spring, remember there is more than just deep cleaning, lawn maintenance and planting of flowers to be done.

Steve Safie, owner of SAS Services, Inc., reminds us that Spring is the perfect time to identify and fix issues within your home’s waterproofing, roofing, plumbing, concrete and foundation systems. Making sure these very important elements are operating up to par now will save you time, energy and money down the road:

  • To prevent a wet basement, be sure that your home’s gutters and downspouts are clear of all debris and are directed away from your foundation. Cleaning your eavestroughs/gutters and downspouts will help make sure water is directed away from your house, avoiding a wet basement. Hiring a professional gutter cleaning crew is highly recommended as they can spot issues immediately and doing it yourself (especially in a two-story house) can be very dangerous.
  • From the ground, examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during this extremely harsh winter. If your home has an older roof covering, it may be time for replacement. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys need to be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.
  • Spring is a great time of year to inspect and conduct maintenance to your basement sump pump. Making sure your sump pump is operating correctly is critical to prepare for heavy spring rains and avoiding basement flooding. After unplugging your sump pump, remove any debris from the sump pump basin and water intake. You will also want to test the float switch to make sure it isn’t stuck. Next, you should run a stress test on the motor and check the discharge pipe to make sure it is clear. Flood the sump pump basin with a bucket of water to see how the system reacts. If the motor appears to stress or the discharge pipe backs up, call a technician. If you do not have one already, consider installing a back-up sump pump to act as insurance should the primary sump pump fail.
  • Check faucets and hose bibs to make sure water flows freely. If an outdoor faucet drips or if there is leakage inside your home the first time the hose is turned on, you may have had a frozen pipe that cracked and needs to be replaced.
  • Inspect dishwasher, washing machine and ice maker supply hoses for bulges or leaks. Replace hoses showing signs of weakness or older than ten years. Use stainless steel hoses wherever possible. They are more reliable and less prone to bursting than other types.
  • Check your concrete foundation for cracks. While small cracks are normal, large horizontal cracks or cracks that are wider at the bottom than at the top are signs that your foundation might need to be repaired. Check concrete stairs and walkways for signs of damage or rotting, and check for cracks in driveways and sidewalks. Test the railings that are set in concrete steps to ensure that they are stable.
  • Creating a gradual slope to your yard to direct water away from your home. This will help protect your foundation from pooling rainwater, thus preventing your basement from wetness.

A roofing contractor in Michigan is essential if you find leaks or mold growing on your roof. Whether your need major or minor repairs to your roof, finding the right roofing contractor will save you time and money in the long run. You want a professional that is going to be qualified to deliver the service and work needed to make your roof long lasting. If you are not familiar with the construction industry, there are a few things that you should be aware of before you hire a roofing contractor in your area. These key qualities will give you the best roofer for any size job.

Licenses & Certifications

A professional roofing contractor in Michigan should be able to give you all of their licensing information and certifications. These certifications and licenses should tell you the states, cities and towns that they are licensed to work. If your roofing contractor cannot provide these documents to you, go with another company. They should also have liability insurance for all work being done on your property. This will insure anything that goes wrong and protect you.

A professional roofing contractor in Michigan will be able to provide estimates to the amount of work that needs to be done to your home. This will include the materials, the removal of the old roofing and the time that it will take to complete the job. These estimates should be free, but some companies will charge you for one. Ask beforehand if they will give you a free estimate so you’re not in the dark about the price tag for having the job done.

Professional roofers should have extensive experience in all aspects of the trade. Whether they have been in business for over 20 years or they have obtained the highest amount of education in the trade, they should be able to tell you why they are the company you should go with. If they cannot tell you about their experience, go with another company. Most companies will be happy to tell you the different jobs they have performed and give you testimonials of their former clients.

How to Get the Best Roofing Estimate in Michigan

A roofing estimate in Michigan can come in handy when you find leaks or mold growing on your roof. Knowing how much money fixing your roof is going to cost is essential. When you employ a roofing company to fix your roof, an estimate should be around the actual cost of the job. While some people try to estimate the work so they can do it themselves, there are several reasons why you should always go with a professional roofing company. Here are the benefits to hiring a professional roofer.

Estimates Give You Professional Eyes

A roofing estimate in Michigan is not just for the customer. A company will keep the roofing estimate in Michigan for their own records in the event that you go with their company. When a roofer gives you an estimate on the work that your roof needs, they try to take into account every aspect of the job. Generally, these estimates are going to be just above or just below the actual cost. When a roofer comes to give you an estimate, you get professional eyes on your roof. They will be able to tell you exactly what needs to be done for preventative work as well as repairs.

They Have The Tools

Sure, you could spend a whole weekend on your roof repairing a leak. You can also spend two hundred dollars on supplies at a local hardware store. However, a roofer might be able to have the job done a few hours for two hundred twenty five dollars. When you employ a roofing professional, they come to your house prepared. They can usually have the job done exponentially faster than you would be able to do yourself.

A Guarantee

A guarantee is something that every homeowner loves. This means that the work that is performed on the roof is guaranteed for a certain amount of time. If the roof starts to leak or the shingles start to come apart, the roofing company will come out and replace the work and materials for free. If you do the work yourself, there is no guarantee that you even plugged the leak. Go with a professional to get the job done right the first time.

Guide to Choosing Roofing Companies in Michigan

Employing a Michigan roofing company could be one of the biggest investments that you make. Finding a great Michigan roofing company is important for every repair made to your roof. Roofs can start to leak due to a variety of reasons. If the leak is not handled properly, further damage will occur. Having work to your roof done properly the first time will keep it long lasting while also giving your home more resale value. While there are probably a lot of roofing companies in your area, finding the one that is right for you is vital. Here are a few ways that you can find the right roofing company for your job.

Scam roofing companies in Michigan pop up in every city. There are a few things that you can do to weed out the scam companies in your area. The first thing to look for is a permanent address for the company. Scam companies will have PO boxes or other non-permanent addresses listed. Look for company phones and ask if they have a business license. You can also ask the company to see a list of former clients so you can contact them for references.

Your Roof

There are a lot of different types of roofs and there are a lot of different types of roofing companies. A roofing company in Michigan that specializes on residential roofing might not have the ability to work on commercial roofs. Ask the company that you are interviewing which type of roofing they are licensed to work on. They should have experience and qualifications allowing them to work on your specific type of roof.

Insurance & Workers Compensation

All roofing companies in Michigan should offer workers compensation and have general liability insurance to cover any injuries or destruction of property that occurs when working your job. If the company cannot offer these documents to you, then you should find a company that will. When somebody is hurt on your property, you could be liable for the damages to their person and their lost wages. This type of insurance protects you while the company and their workers are fixing your roof.
