Preventing Roof and Gutter Damage During Winter

The extreme amounts of snow that fell across the East Coast this past week served as a reminder how fortunate we have been to escape such madness thus far. That’s the good news. The bad news is winter ain’t over just yet, and from now until spring the heavy snowfall and extreme cold temperatures could make its way to us, which presents the possibility of ice dams forming and causing water damage in our home.

Although the best way to protect your home’s roof and gutter system from winter’s harsh effects is through year-round maintenance, the roofing experts at SAS Services, Inc. have provided the following tips to protecting your roof and gutters if heavy snow and ice hit our area this season:

  • Clean debris, snow and ice from gutters and down spouts.
  • Use a roof rake to clear snow from your roof. For safe snow removal that won’t endanger you or damage your roof, use a snow rake with a long extension arm that will allow you to remove the snow while standing on the ground or hire a snow removal contractor.
  • Make sure your attic is sufficiently insulated and ventilated. Maintaining airflow from under the eaves of soffit area through roof vents helps prevent ice dams.
  • Each month, look in your attic and check for discolored wood spots, any areas of frost or snow accumulation visible above the layer of installation.

Keep in mind that regular roofing inspections can alert you to potential problems and may help you prevent leaking during the coldest months.

Ice Damming During the Winter

Over the past 24 hours, Metro Detroit  has been walloped by an arctic blast that brought heavy snowfall and bone-chilling temperatures to our area. The substantial snowfall, paired with near-record frigid temperatures, can wreak havoc on a home’s roofing and gutter systems in the form of ice dams.

Ice dams usually occur after a heavy snowfall and several days of freezing temperatures. An ice dam forms when the temperature in your attic is above freezing causing snow on the roof to melt and then refreeze in dropping temperatures.  The pools of water behind those dams can cause leakage into your home and can mean thousands of dollars in structural damage.

The most effective solution to prevent ice dams is to reduce or eliminate any sources of heat in the attic and ventilate the attic space of the roof. Prevent warm, moist downstairs air from infiltrating the attic by appropriately insulating your attic’s floor and using a dehumidifier to control water vapor. Be sure to identify and seal all openings that would allow vapor to rise into the attic and always make sure your home’s gutters are free of debris.

Removing an ice dam yourself is extremely dangerous. If you are in the middle of suffering through an ice dam or fear a leak is imminent, your safest option is to contact the roofing experts at SAS Services, Inc. at (800) CALL-SAS to remove and clear the ice dam before water backs up into your home and can remodel your roof to prevent future ice dams.
